“Two weddings in one weekend?! Can you imagine?” “Psh. We could handle that.”
This topic of conversation was discussed between us quite some time ago regarding a Saturday wedding for one client and a Sunday wedding that was already booked. There was a blend of opinions…a confidence in our ability to overcome twice the exhaustion and stint of normal post-wedding toe numbness, plus a bite-sized bit of apprehension.
But we accepted without hesitation when Ileen Hoekman of Once Upon a Wedding invited us to be a part of the Love is a Gift: LGBT Wedding Chapel at Colorado Springs’ All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church on November 8, 2014. This celebration of rights was set up to accept multiple same-sex couples to legally wed under Colorado’s new marriage license equality, with vendors donating services and products to the couples.
That day, we photographed wedding ceremonies for two couples that we’d previously never met. After having spent a short time with Kathy & Cheryl, and Anna & Holly, we’re wishing the wedding photo marathon had lasted longer! Even long enough for numb toes. These couples have been waiting for years to be recognized as lifelong teams. It was pretty freaking awesome to see their dreams come true.
Kathy and Cheryl’s ceremony was led and followed in the reception area of the church by a buzzing from numerous friends, coworkers, and family, nearly as excited as the couple—and that didn’t even include the KOAA media coverage.
Rev. Nori Rost beamed with happiness as she signed her first marriage certificate…in a deceiving pen-looking mechanical pencil. *$&%@#! That was just for practice anyway.
When it was time for Anna and Holly’s wedding, Jesse Sage Hair, Make-Up & Skin Care was there to give them star treatment. In fact, they later graciously said that they felt like celebrities with all the vendors there supporting them.
The floral arrangements provided by Hillside Consultants & Refresh My Vase were somehow a perfect color match for the day. We attribute it to some sort of floral magic that we don’t understand.
Sweet Pea Cake Company’s flawless (and DELISHIOUSH!) cupcakes were nowhere to be found by the end of the day.
Gordon Lewis infused the building with sweet acoustic songs on his guitar. It was even enough to divert attention from the crashing sounds of clumsiness of one *COUGH* photographer (Natalie) knocking over a baby’s-breath-and-water-filled Mason jar during one of the ceremonies.
The ambiance wouldn’t have been complete without the chic vintage furniture and props from Love Story Vintage Rentals. Owner, Jenna Franson, hand-picks and hauls in these amazing pieces all over for use at a myriad of events. She’s so covert with her setup and breakdown that we didn’t even see the subcontracted muscles (her husband) that she claimed to have, so we think she just has a fancy nose-wiggle thingy going on.
We so appreciated being a part of this event and are elated for the happy couples and the rights that finally provide the same marriage freedom to everyone.
